My Tastings

2016 Catena Alta

Nicola Catena planted his first Malbec vineyard in Mendoza in 1902. His grandson, Nicolás Catena, is known as the man who revolutionized Argentine wine and introduced high altitude Malbec to the world. There’s no shortage of Argentine Malbec in the world. Exports are prolific and still fashionable. The clone that was planted in the country from native Bordeaux displays a rich and deeper brooding character. The dry, cool, high altitude climate grows a thicker skin fruit from the sun’s strong radiation. Deep ruby.

High intensity, with black fruit of berries, cherries, black plum, tobacco smoke, charcuterie, roasted coffee beans. On the palate, dry medium acid ripe medium + tannins, high alcohol, full-body, baked blackberries, cracked black pepper, blueberry pie, menthol, bitter espresso, cocoa leaves, teriyaki sauce. This is a good solid wine. It exhibits intense flavors and aromas of fruit and spicy aromatics. It’s fruit-forward and abrasive. The tannins are grippy and envelop the mouth with bitter core and polished acid. It’s not a complex wine, the fruit is too ripe and the acid and tannin don’t hold together. It’s linear and uncomplicated a crowd pleaser and the label is erotic. Don’t wait, drink it now.
