Can you imagine that this wine is made from grapes that were grown in the same area of the world’s first and oldest winery which dates back to 6100 years ago? Yes, I’m talking about Vayots Dzor, Armenia, where this unique sparkling wine is produced. This area is 60 miles from Mount Ararat, where some people believe Noah parked his ark after the deluge and planted the first vineyard on Earth. There’s no evidence that this is the case, but it’s an interesting story nonetheless
What’s exciting is I experienced time travel both with the origins of this wine and where I found this wine, Pismo Beach, California, between Armenia and the Pacific Ocean. Thanks to my tradition of christening our lodge with ta sparkling and Taste of the Valleys, as always happens during our frequent visits to the city, I did not hesitate for a moment to buy this jewelry in the store, it was like a beacon.
Keush Winery was created by Vahe Keushguerian, the pioneer who put Armenian wine on the global market as well as created job opportunities within the wine industry. Keushguerian has managed to employ the best winemaker Arman Manoukian with experience working in Champagne who worked as a cellar master for two major champagne houses Nicolas Feuillatte and Champagne Boizel.
The founder of Keush Winery, Vahe Keushguerian was the pioneer who put Armenian wine on the global market, as well as created job opportunities within the wine industry. The winery not only strives to modernize the 6000 years old traditional wine-making practices through innovation and marketing but has also made it possible for the Armenian people to create a strong and vibrant job market in an otherwise heavily agricultural country.
Keushguerian not only exploited the modern quality but new styles such as Sparkling wines with native grapes;
Voskehat: Armenia’s acclaimed white grape, with a huge body, lemon, jasmine, and white flowers.
Khatoun Kharji: Floral and high acidic.
Areni Noir: A black grape varietal with spiced cherry cordial, smokey finish, and a bitter aftertaste.
When it comes to this sparkling wine, this is not a simple wine, it is quite exciting with such ancient native grapes as Voskehat and Khatoun. Moreover, these grapes come from high up in the country- the 5900 feet to be exact. This makes them some of the highest in the world.
All of these grapes combine to create a sparkling with a distinct flavor that provides a feeling of place unlike any other. The color is pale gold, with delicate steam of pearl effervescence crowning the glass’s rim. The nose is wild and robust, with citrus and luscious tree fruit aromas. On the palate, it’s bone dry with a little alcohol content, lively acidity, a hint of white skin tannin for texture, and a consistent nuance. Citrus and orchard fruit flavors are bright and crisp, with spicy vanilla bean undertones and a salty raw nut finish.
This is an excellent wine with a $35 value that delivers a lot of flavor and fun. What rare sparkling or ancient grape wines are you drinking today?
To Constancia; According to the wine sheet ( Keush Origins ): there is no Areni grape in this wine. I asked the owner of the winery; I’m waiting for an answer. I also wanted to do a very short interview with her, (she lives in the USA), we can use her answer in the article if you are ok with that of course.
And I liked the article, even though it seems I changed a lot, the main problem was about the main spine. There should be a discipline (general to … or vice versa) to follow, which I use the same for all of your articles, and the tone as well. I give extra attention to the wine explanation part. I try not to change any verb that describes the wine (for example zesty citrus), these belong to you, I only try to adapt it to the wset4 systematic approach. On the other hand, I try to make your articles more attention-taker by adding some specials, interesting info that not any author can learn easily, or small interviews with winemakers or owners. Thanks for working with me, have a good one.
Would you mind telling me what your legacy in a glass is?
