LA ANTIGUA CLÁSICO RIOJA BLANCO 2014

Alberto Orte Espejo was born in Madrid and now lives in El Puerto de Santa María (Cádiz) with his family. In 1999, at the age of 24, he partnered with his friend Patrick Mata, a native of Malaga, and created Ole Imports. Alberto handles the selection of wines and winemaking in Spain while Patrick manages the commercial and marketing part of the business in the USA.

In 2003 Alberto and Partrick cultivated Vinos Atlantico that engaged in producing wines from specific vineyard sites throughout Spain. The integral objective was to source indigenous grapes from old vine, grown on high elevations and low yields. Alberto Orte Vinos is a supplementary part of Vinos Atlantico that features wines farmed and vinified by Alberto.

This wine is from old vine Viura and Garnacha Blanca in Sierra De La Demanda, south of the Ebro River in Rioja Alta. Vineyards face north at high elevations contributing to cool temperatures and minimal sunlight. Consequential, grapes ripen slower concentrating acids, fresh flavors, and minerality.

The name pays tribute to the barrels used that are allowed to develop flor, equipped with flavors and aromas of sotolon. This enriches the wine bright flavors and solid framework.

Displays pale gold medium+  intensity with e notes of citrus fruit lemon/ lime curd, burnt orange rind, bruised apple, savory spices of fenugreek, fennel, white pepper, solid oak, and tar.

On the palate it’s dry, medium + acid, medium+ alcohol, medium+ body, coated texture, medium+ intensity with fresh citrus, pear tart golden apples, toasted yeast, cheese curds, exotic spices medium+ finish This wine is very good. There is a solid balance of flavors and aromas that linger front and mid-palate but doesn’t deliver the long finish the body delivers. It’s still fresh and beginning to develop more savory notes that feature its pure minerality. There is enough acid to preserve it. However, it’s lovely now. Hold for another 5 years and you’ll be rewarded with a style of wine that is still dry and has characteristics of a Hungarian Tokaji!
