PETITE LA FERME ROUGE VIN DU MAROC AOG ZAER

How many wines come out of Morocco, not many, but this gem does. It’s from an Estate in the heart of the AOG Zaers region built-in 1933. It’s highly praised among the great historical wine regions of Morocco for many reasons. It’s positioned about 45 km from the Atlantic Ocean, bordered on the west by the valleys of Wadi Korifla, on the south by the foothills of the Middle Atlas, and vines are grown on ancient sand, red clay along with limestone and shale soils; creating wines of structure and intense minerality. Since 1998 It has undergone restoration on advanced viticulture and vinification practices.

Jacques Poulain is the winemaker who sees Organic grapes are hand-harvested and applies gentle extractions. Morocco has a long way to go to find an identity. It does plant the usual suspects that tolerate hot dry desert conditions, such as, Petite Syrah, Tannat, Carignan, and of course Chardonnay and Viognier. The blend is 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Carignan, 10% Marselan.

MARSELAN

The grape french origin mostly grew in the Languedoc region. It is a deliberate cross between Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache. It has the quality and fineness of Cabernet but the heat tolerance and perfume of Grenache. It’s highly revered in China’s wine production. There are small plantings on the North Coast of California. It produces deeply colored wines of intense aromatics, soft tannins, and the potential to age.

However, there’s a lot of money currently invested in the Mediterranean and Eastern European countries that have the probability to lure the consumer away from the lake of lackluster wines coming from France Italy, and Spain.

Notice the Deep Purple with an Opaque core. On the nose, the red and black fruit is ripe yet fresh with a high intense aroma of black cherries, cranberry compote, juice black plum, black and red currant cracked smoked cinnamon, cloves, and dried roses along with graphite. On the palate, it’s dry medium acid, medium + alcohol medium + body medium tannins soft texture, medium + intensity with black and red fruits, black and red cherries, stewed cranberries and rhubarb, red and black ripe plum smoky-sweet baking spices, vanilla bean menthol, along with oak. Short finish This is a good simple wine. It’s nicely balanced with clean aromas, fresh forward fruit. It lacks texture and acidity to deliver a firmer structure to build on the palate. It’s pleasant to drink and can stand alone for easy drinking or can go well with highly seasoned meats. Explore your palate.
