In the eclipse of the 14 medieval towers of San Gimignano was born what can be called the most distinguished white of Tuscany. In this landscape of wine, Tuscan Vernaccia occupies a role of great relevance, what originates is a tradition that goes back to the mid-thirteenth century. The Vernaccia was the first Italian white wine that received the DOC concession, in 1966.
Simone Santini has known locally as the “Great Santini”, is a very respected winemaker who is classically enchanting just like his wines. After he graduated from Siena Agrarian Institute with a degree in winemaking technology, he was motivated to plant a vineyard on his estate and produce his own wine. Less than 2 miles away from the central city of San Gimignano, Le Calcinaie is a boutique vineyard and winery in the soul of the Tuscan countryside. In 1986 he planted his vines and his first successful vintage came in 1993. In comparison to other estates in the San Gimignano region with deeper roots, Le Calcinaie is certified organic and considered a biological wine-growing estate with dedicated regard to the environment.
This wine displays a pale straw gold, on the nose medium intensity with thirst-quenching citrus fruit of lemon honey oranges, crisp pear, honeydew melon, white peach white flowers raw almonds, wet stone. On the palate dry, medium+ acid medium alcohol, medium body medium intensity with juicy citrus, lemon oil, yellow grapefruit, pears, and fresh white peach, honeydew melons, and bruised kiwi, bitter almond, water lilies, and mineral vibrant texture and long bitter finish. This is an outstanding wine. It’s focused and linear without overwhelming the palate. It’s youthful and refreshing with lively acid. It’s perfumed on the mid-palate with a mineral core, very polished, it has a pleasantly bitter finish. The aromas and flavors although delicate linger. This wine has great potential to age, developing fruit pie, honey almond butter, brewed camomile tea, and fig newtons. I would love to meet this Great Santini!
