As with many beach towns, each has its own story and Cayucos is not short of its own. It’s a place where cowboys and hippies collide, and where the sun sets over the ocean each night. This small town is the perfect place to relax and escape the hustle and bustle of city life.
It’s not as significant in history as some other Central Coast counterparts, but significant enough to be well respected and a sought-after resort destination town. With the beauty of nature everywhere you look, and historical landmarks scattered across the small town, there is no denying that those who call this place home are lucky to live here. Some people might even say they’re blessed.
The first permanent settlers were Native Americans in search of food after being instructed by their tribesmen to explore; And when Spaniards raided these lands centuries ago during an expedition called the Portola Expedition they were given this very specific instruction – Canoes – hence why we now call this majestic part of California home as Cayucos.
This time of the year is usually dominated by tourists and people eager to travel. But here, most can find peace from this hustle and bustle which has taken over most beaches during peak summer months. here are a few options for those feeling hungry and I recommend Schooners Bar & Grill. With great views overlooking both the bay and ocean, it will transport anyone who wants an escape back home away from all this chaos into a world of tranquility somewhere off in the Caribbean Sea.
The Cervezas are generous and fresh seafood as if you had cast your own line and landed it on your plate. Order their award-winning clam chowder, Bloody Mary, and Cayucos hot sauce, and you’ll feel like Blackbeard himself.
Just settle in at this seafood shack, which also serves breakfast and has a full bar and a slew of locals.
If the views aren’t enough for you, tuck your date into the galley dining room for a more intimate setting, and pretend you’re toasting to Jack Sparrow.

Once I wrapped my head around how the vaqueros built this town, it was easy to see why the Beach Boys Genertion christened a relaxed vibe that continues until today. Everything is within walking distance. What’s funny is that people from so far away are able to order Uber and it’ll show up in no time at all – even though this town only has about three miles of roads! If you order a ride in Ojai, you will have to wait an hour before anyone acknowledges your body is still breathing.
The Sea Shanty should be the next stop.

It’s owned by a charming, unassuming Indian family. Choose a peekaboo ocean view suite (209) and unwind in a cozy living room with a fireplace and a kitchen that overlooks the ocean.
In this cowboy/pirate town, antique shopping abounds. However, after checking in, take a walk along the pier to see a classic ethos California sunset.
After inhaling the glory of the Pacific, head over to the Cass House
In 1875, town founder and ship captain James Cass built the Cass House a block from the beach. He constructed the Cayucos wharf for his ship warehousing company. It has been transformed into a luxury boutique hotel, grill, bakery, bar, and event venue. While their grill is excellent, their open bar is truly unique, so you may skip dinner in favor of a drink, as we did.
Pre-dinner cocktails are essential because of their expertly crafted cocktails and pulsing synergy. Dinner is where the heart meets the stomach, and in a small town, there aren’t many options.
LUNADA GARDENS BISTRO
This ancient way station served as a train halt for both miners and seamen. Moving on, seating is perplexing as to where you wish to be seated. The food is phenomenal.
Make a point of ordering their saffron scallops.
Of course, every town has a drinking establishment worth visiting, and the Old Cayucos Tavern & Card Room is no exception.

Get naughty in Monterey County and enjoy live music, stiff drinks, and SHH! Play some poker! If you want to pretend to be a cowboy or a pirate – Cayucos will fully oblige. Come back again if you’re brave enough to immerse yourself into the traditional Polar Dip. I certainly know my Babito would be completely on board with it.
Locals dive headfirst into the freezing Pacific Ocean during California winters. The cold water isn’t good for shrinkage, but it’s perfect for enjoying a soothing hot toddy afterward.
